Destination Eastern Europe
Eastern Europe buckles under the sheer strain of being forced together for descriptive purposes. Never has a region been so slippery for those trying to grasp it, pin it down and define it. The region's strangely unifying factor is, paradoxically, its incredible contrasts, particularly in the face of recurrent clichés that stereotype it as grey, poor and backward. Even the most superficial glance will tell you that nothing could be further from the truth, whether you're using wi-fi in Tallinn or trying fusion cuisine in Sarajevo.

The geographic, cultural, linguistic and culinary sweep of Eastern Europe Is simply enormous - from Mediterranean Mbanra to BaVtic St Petersburg, irom tU-approved transparency to bureaucratic peat bog, from Latin to Cyrillic and from blinis to goulash. Experiencing and living Eastern Europe is the way to go (merely seeing it will never do) and independent travel is definitely the best way to do this. Beautiful baroque cathedrals in Poland, peasant hospitality in the Balkans or just the sheer black comedy of daily life in Belarus will leave enduring impressions on any visitor's mind long after the majesty of the region's great cities, beaches or mountain ranges has faded.

It helps to be a surrealist, of course. Two decades after the region changed beyond recognition from the grey, uniform communist states Immortalised by TV images of bread queues in the 1980s, going to Eastern Europe remains a trip through the looking glass when coming from the relatively predictable certainties of the West. Look no further for adventure; come to Eastern Europe to be confounded, bemused, amazed and amused. You have nothing to lose but your preconceptions!
