Proceedings of Second International Conference on Analogy

This volume is the outcome of the 2nd International Analogy Conference - ANALOGY-2009 - which was organized and hosted by the New Bulgarian University and its Central and East European Center for Cognitive Science, and was held between July 24th and July 27th 2009 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The 1st International Analogy Conference took place over a decade ago at the New Bulgarian University, in July 1998. It was attended by 70 participants from all over the world. Two books emerged from the 1st conference (Holyoak, Gentner & Kokinov, 1998; and Gentner, Holyoak & Kokinov, 2001).

A decade later we are now witnessing the continued development of the field. ANALOGY-2009 brought together researchers from around the world: Europe, the United States, Canada, Argentina, Australia, and India. These researchers represent many disciplines and approaches, from computational and formal modeling to psychological experimentation, from comparative research to developmental studies, from brain research to applications in education, social policy, design, and creativity. The broad program includes 52 accepted papers (40 as talks and 12 as posters), as well as 7 symposia that include 38 invited speakers. The symposia were designed to make the conference much more interactive and to stimulate debates and cooperation.

Many topics discussed at ANALOGY-2009 are relatively new or represent recent innovations: Bayesian models, brain mechanisms that underlie analogy, possible precursors of analogical reasoning in non-human primates, unconscious processes in analogical processing, development of analogical reasoning in children, interaction between emotions and analogy, and embodied analogical processes.

We would like to thank the staff and students at NBU, especially Irena Bozadjieva, Stanislava Borisova, Kristina Nenova for their invaluable help in running the conference smoothly, and Irena Bozadjieva, Ivan Vankov, and Svetlin Kosev for making this volume possible.

We would also like to thank our sponsors: The New Bulgarian University and its Fund for Strategic Development, and its Central and East European Center for Cognitive Science; the ANALOGY project (NEST Program, Contract 29088) funded by the EC; the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD), Air Force Office of Scientific Research, United States Air Force Research Laboratory; the Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG); and the Cognitive Science Society.
