Nick Kent was born and brought up in London. After making a name for himself as a contributor to the self-styled British underground press while still at Bedford College, he was asked to do the same by the New Musical Express. There followed a long period of collaboration that stretched through the 1970s, during which time Kent also enjoyed a career as a musician working with the Sex Pistols and recording with his own group the Subterraneans. In the 1980s he wrote for The Face, Arena, the Sunday Times, Spin, Vox and numerous other periodicals. In the 1990s he moved to France, where he still lives with his girlfriend, writer and TV personality Laurence Romance, and their son, James. In 2002 he was presented with the NME/Brats ‘God-like genius’ award for his thirty-year career as a rock writer, and he is currently a contributor to the Guardian, Mojo and France’s Libération.
